Don’t miss
Besides wine tasting, there’s plenty to do in Central Sonoma County. Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve north of Guerneville is packed with ancient redwood trees and laced with secret trails waiting to be explored. To get an above-ground view, check out Sonoma Canopy Tours in Occidental, where you’ll zip high above the ground through 2,000 year-old redwoods trees.
Business and culture revolve around the thriving city of Santa Rosa. Fun-for-any-age activities include the Charles M. Schulz Museum – home to the largest collection of Peanuts comic strips in the world—and a ride with Wine Country Balloons , where you’ll float high above the valley with views out to the Pacific Ocean. Wine tasting is a must, of course, and MacPhail Tasting Lounge at the Barlow in Sebastopol offers flights of their small-batch Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs in a low-key atmosphere. And of course, a wine taster’s gotta eat, so head over to Wild Flour Bread Bakery in Freestone for their wood-fired brick oven breads and scones (get there early, they often sell out by noon). The Restaurant at Farmhouse Inn in Forestville is perfect for a romantic meal or special occasion, with its wine country-luxe ambiance and exquisitely prepared dishes.
