Join us at the opening celebration for Precious Cargo, an exhibition of California Indian cradle baskets and childbirth traditions. For centuries, California Indians have relied on cradle baskets as a way to carry their infants and keep them safe. However, in addition to their functional attributes, they also play a role in shaping a child’s character and directing his or her future.

Today, renewed cultural pride among California Indians is finding expression in the creation and gift-giving of traditional cradle baskets; while sharing knowledge about the gathering, sorting and weaving techniques involved in this time-honored tradition. This exhibit represents their stories, and the stories of all those who have played with, carried, or occupied a cradle basket of their own.

Admission is free but the Sonoma County Museum asks for a small donation to support the exhibition and reception.
