Since 2004, the Petaluma River Marathon/Half-Marathon has served as the West Coast flat-water long-distance championship. It is one of the most beautiful and fun races on the west coast. Hosted by Petaluma-based North Bay Rowing Club on the Sunday prior to Labor Day, it allows all small-craft users, whether rowers or paddlers, to choose either the half- or full marathon course (13 or 26 miles, respectively). Eligible craft include all flat- and open-water rowing boats, ocean or flat water kayaks, surfskis, canoes, SUPs, and outrigger canoes. Registration is through Regatta Central and begins around mid-August each year. The race begins in the morning, and a pot-luck is held afterward on the grassy area behind Foundry Wharf’s offices.
