Welcome

Since its launch in 1977, the Matanzas Creek Winery has built its reputation on Sauvignon Blanc and Merlot – two varieties that thrive in Sonoma’s temperate climate. Matanzas Creek also produces limited quantities of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and other Bordeaux-style reds. All of the winery’s fruit comes from sustainably-farmed, estate vineyards scattered throughout the mild interior and cool coastal AVAs of the county. The production of world-class Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot and Chardonnay requires world-class vineyards. Matanzas Creek harvests fruit from some of Sonoma County’s preeminent sites in Bennett Valley, Alexander Valley and Knights Valley. The diversity of climates, geographies and topographies in these AVAs ensures that all of Matanzas Creek’s wines possess character, concentration and structure.

Naturally defined by the three mountain peaks that envelop it, Bennett Valley existed for many years in quiet obscurity – bountifully sustaining an agricultural community that had all but forgotten the valley’s pre-prohibition viticultural roots. It wasn’t until 1977 with the founding of Matanzas Creek Winery that the area’s winemaking potential was once again unearthed. But Matanzas Creek didn’t just breathe new life into the area, it helped revolutionize the entire industry and, in the process, put Bennett Valley back on the map. And now, over thirty years after the release of its first vintage, Matanzas Creek stands at the forefront of California viticulture. Each day yields new and exciting discoveries, and the winery’s future is as bright as it’s universally celebrated past.

In addition to its wines, Matanzas Creek is also famous for their spectacular lavender gardens. In 1991, Matanzas Creek planted the spectacular, terraced lavender gardens that greet visitors as they arrive at the winery. An integral part of the estate, the lavender is planted in harmony with the land and farmed organically to preserve the essence of the local ecosystem. Once the lavender reaches full bloom, it is hand-cut for use in culinary, bath, body and home products. The entire plant is utilized from the stalks, which produce grilling sticks to infuse lavender flavors into poultry, lamb and vegetables, to the flowers and seeds, which are handcrafted at the estate into unique bath and spa products.
